Baptism and Exorcism?

July 31st, 2018, Promulgated by Hopefull

A few years ago, Msgr. Charles Pope introduced the subject as a question in one of his posts:

Should the Church Consider Reintroducing the Exorcism Prayers in the Rite of Baptism?

I don’t remember any follow-on discussion, let alone conclusions, so I’d like to invite the subject here on Cleansing Fire. With the way evil has run rampant in our world and, sad to say, even among the hierarchy, perhaps the question is timely. My own preference is that I’d rather not be living in a house with family members who have not received the exorcism rite in their baptism, and I can’t see how reintroducing the rite can possibly have a negative impact. At least it should be optional, shouldn’t it? Is it possible to “add it on” now for people who didn’t receive it? Anyone know?

Looking for others’ opinions on the subject.

The Rite of Baptism includes the prayer of exorcism, although I believe that some clerics skip it. See #86 – http://www.ibreviary.com/m/preghiere.php?tipo=Rito&id=103

erhaps Msgr. Pope was referring to the extraordinary rite of baptism, which includes a much more direct and firm rite of exorcism.

According to information in the blog I am posting, the former Rite of Exorcism used in Baptism was removed in 1969 and replaced with milder wording which comes across as more of a blessing.
The author of the blog, Msgr. Charles Pope, cites the reason that the Rite of Exorcism was changed and relays the new wording.
He also relays the English translation of the Rite Of Exorcism which was formerly used, and is still used in the Extraordinary Form of Baptism.

It is an interesting article which explains the concept of exorcising before blessing and dedicating to God.
The blog article also includes a video of Baptism in the Extraordinary Form.

He suggests that those who want the original, stronger Rite of Exorcism, which includes Four Rites of Exorcism, have the Baptism done in the Extraordinary Form, as the Extraordinary Form has been permitted in recent years. (Msgr. Charles Pope notes that the Extraordinary Form cannot be done in English, which might pose an obstacle for some people).

I do not know about the possibility about having the original Rite of Exorcism, which includes Four Rites of Exorcism, being done to someone who has already received Baptism. You would have to approach a priest who observes the Extraordinary Form of the Mass for that answer.

    Here is another article:

I’m sure that some in the Church Hierarchy guilty of sexual predication and sexual abuse, and those who helped to cover it up, received Baptism under the Extraordinary Form.
I can’t help but feel Ex-Cardinal Theodore Mc Carrick needs an Exorcism. And I think there are others who need an Exorcism as well.
There has also been other corruption in the Church involving Finances and Doctrine. Perhaps it is time that the Four Rites of Exorcism of Baptism are revisited and stronger Rites of Exorcism are used on who are given into temptation and the powers of darkness and involved in serious mortal sin.

Given the all encompassing components of these issues of these serious sins, maybe it is time to incorporate the exorcisms into the rite of The Sacrament of Penance and have the exorcisms at each confession!!
