Coming Home: Statue of St. Boniface

June 4th, 2016, Promulgated by Hopefull

David Andreatta provides an interesting look into one statue from one church in the Diocese of Rochester.  Wonder where the rest of our statues etc. have gone?

    Hopeful

I have been asking for years where the “Vandals” took the treasures from our closed churches. I have even made a suggestion to the Diocese that they open a diocesan museum at the pastoral center where our confirmation candidates and other interested parties could see articles and learn of the history and heritage or the Rochester diocese.

ONE OF THE SADDEST SCENES I HAVE EVER WITNESSED WAS MANY YEARS AGO WHEN I WAS AN ALTAR BOY AND FATHER ROBERT KLEM CSB TOLD, WITH TEARS IN HIS EYES HOW THE PASTOR OF HOLY TRINITY CHURCH IN WEBSTER HAD THE BAPTISMAL FONT,WHERE FATHER KLEM WAS BAPTIZED, SMASHED TO PIECES TO MAKE WAY FOR THE MODERN ONE.

I am so glad that St. Boniface Parish got back their statue of St. Boniface after all these years. Knowing that St. Boniface is the patron saint of Germany, and also of beer, I think it is apropos that the statue on St. Boniface Parish property is facing The German House across the street.

I understand how the baptismal font where you were baptized is a very sacred and sentimental place. I went back to the church I was baptized in on a very special anniversary of my baptism which fell exactly on Sunday. I was hoping to see the entry of my baptism after Mass. After Mass, I as I was looking elsewhere, I dipped my hand in a font of water to bless myself. I turned around after blessing myself with the water, and was completely astonished to come face to face with the baptismal font where I was baptized. I stood there contemplating, taking in that special sacred moment.

That was the last time I recall seeing that baptismal font. It was replaced shortly after by a newer style baptismal font. I don’t know what happened to that original baptismal font.
