The Instrumentum seemed to present us with two conflicting views: pastoral despair or a decision to hope. When Jesus experienced the pastoral despair of his Apostles, he reminded them that for man a thing may seem impossible, but for God all things are possible.

Chaput’s is a good example of authentic “nuance”. Usually, when someone says we have to look at an issue with more nuance, it’s usually code for “obfuscate and capitulate”. It’s like those algebra questions where you know the value of “y” in “= y” and are asked to show your work. If all the fancy work to the left of the equals sign comes to something not y, then it isn’t nuance, it’s just lying.
