Married Father Of Three To Become Catholic Priest

The Ordination of Deacon John Cornelius is this weekend, Saturday, January 26, 2013, at 5 P.M., Immaculate Conception Church, 6 Maple Avenue, Wellsville, NY. His first Mass is also this weekend, Sunday at 3 P.M. at the (old) Church of the Good Shepherd, 3318 E. Henrietta Rd., Henrietta. Map

ALMOND, NY – “You’d better call me Deacon until Saturday,” said John Cornelius with a laugh, during an interview Wednesday at the Rectory of St. Brendan Church in this small, Allegany County community, where he has served as a pastoral associate.

On Saturday in a ceremony in nearby Wellsville, Cornelius, 64, will become a Catholic priest when Bishop Richard Malone of Buffalo ordains him.

What sets Cornelius’ ordination apart, however, is that he is entering the priesthood as a married man, with three grown daughters.

For 20 years, Cornelius had been an Episcopal priest, but left the church two years ago…although he feels in a greater sense that the church left him.
