October 14th, 2011, Promulgated by Bernie

There are certain phrases that conjure up images so frightful one shudders at the mere mention. Swarm of killer bees. School of piranha. National Meeting of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions. Brrrrrrr.

I would have to agree. It’s a scary concept.

Years ago, a friend told me a joke regarding a Liturgist:

He asked me “What is the difference between a Liturgist and a Terrorist?

Punchline: “You can negotiate with a Terrorist.”

I wonder if anyone else has noticed a subtle shift prior to the new missal? Quietly, without comment, I am seeing a few priests make changes in language and distribution of communion to better align with what they are supposed to be doing. Words such as “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at YOUR hands” (instead of the priest saying “OUR” hands) are creeping back in, as is “for the praise and glory of HIS name” instead of the feminist “God’s” name to avoid the masculine gender. Also I am seeing a few priests who normally give the host to the EEM before the priest receives moving toward his first receiving under both forms before giving either the Body or the Blood to the EEM. Small changes, perhaps, but at least in the right direction. It almost seems as if in their revisiting the liturgy they’ve taken notice of a few things amiss and are fixing them….I only have a small sampling of 4 or 5 priests, but it is noticeable. Has anyone else seen this recently?
