There has been a lot of talk in recent days about the “protective umbrella” which Bishop Clark held over Jim Callan and Corpus Christi church while that parish was spiraling out of control. The author of the blog Public Vigil has revealed another piece in the puzzle. Fourteen years before the Spiritus Christi schism, in 1985, then-Father Jim Callan invited a priest from the Archdiocese of Boston to speak at his parish who made several disturbing statements about homosexuality and pedophilia. A Rochesterian who attended this talk wrote a letter to the priest’s ordinary in Boston, in addition to forwarding copies to Callan and Bishop Clark, about the inappropriate statements made by this priest.
Had only our bishop taken notice way back then and kept a closer eye on Corpus Christi.
Here are a few comments made by the visiting priest:
“When adults have sex with children, the children seduced them.”
“The Bible does not say that the homosexual lifestyle is wrong.”
“The Bible was written by ignorant men, then said inspired by the Holy Spirit.”

There are few things in the world less inspiring and more depressing than the DoR.
If the priest is the one I am thinking of, I believe he is now in prison finding out what it means to be exploited and abused. He has cuffs on when he goes out or comes back to prison. The next step will probably be a millstone on his neck when he passes over to the other side.
More of an indictment of Cardinal Law. He didn’t stop Shanley.
There is also a record of a complaint about a talk Shanley gave in Rochester in 1977. Amazingly, some of the specific complaints are almost identical. The difference is that he was speaking at St. Luke’s *Episcopal* Church. Apparently this was a meeting of “Dignity/Integrity”. This same group still exists in Rochester. Here is a quote from their website:

There are two letters from 1977. One is sort of an introduction to the other.

It’s not clear whether Shanley met with any Roman Catholic priests. Some quotes from the description of the meeting:
– Homosexual acts are not sinful, sick, a crime, nor are they immoral.
– What has been done to gays by the straight community calls out for vengeance from heaven.
– Most first homosexual encounters are with straights. It is straights who seduce youngsters.
– He stated celibacy is impossible, therefore, the only alternative is for gays to have sex with different persons whenever they want to.
– He stated that the adult is not the seducer — the “kid” is the seducer [in cases of pedophilia]
– He stated that he can think of no sexual act that causes psychic damage — “not even incest or bestiality”.
– He said “Homosexuality is a gift from God and should be celebrated”.
That last one should sound very familiar from some of Bishop Clark’s statements. Father Paul Shanley is of course the notorious homosexual predator and child molester from the Boston Archdiocese. He was probably the first outspoken advocate of the “gay liberation” movement within the Catholic Church. As such he was a hero of the homosexual community. I searched the Rochester Dignity-Integrity website, but found no mention of Shanley. Strange, you would think that they would want to celebrate those early days of the struggle for “gay liberation”.
I wrote an article on my PublicVigil blog about Shanley and his relationship to the early homosexual movement. WARNING: It’s not a pleasant subject, but I tried to keep it tolerable. You can find it here:
Public Pedophiles
After 2002 when Shanley was exposed as a homosexual predator of young boys, the homosexual movement tried to disassociate themselves from him. I found a 2002 article in a pro-homosexual magazine called the Advocate which would make Stalin proud. It is there attempt to rewrite history, and they have gotten away with it. The article is titled “The shame of Father Shanley” and it was the cover article from the July 23, 2002 issue of the Advocate. (NOTE: This is a Google books link, I don’t know how well this will work for others or if the link will change in the future.)
“The shame of Father Shanley”
The truth is that the homosexual community knew very well about Shanley’s activities all along. It’s very strange that in the Advocate article that they talk about how “repelling” Shanley’s actions were, but I can’t see why that would be true from a homosexual perspective. Just take a look at the typical “Gay Pride” parade pictures, for example.
MichaelL,
That the American hierarchy – especially the Boston chapter – did essentially nothing about Shanley, despite more than a decade of what I’ll politely call “warning signs”, is simply evidence of their complicity – at least that’s the position of Randy Engel, author of The Rite of Sodomy – Homosexuality and the Roman Catholic Church …
This is from the second part of a two-part article published in 2002 and located here. Part 1 is here.
This is the evil that has wormed its way into every fiber of the church. Pray.
