Defending Truth and Tradition in the Roman Catholic Church

St. Isidore and a Link Round-Up

April 5th, 2011, Promulgated by b a

I’m getting quite good at a being a Johnny-come-lately.  Yesterday was my name day – my confirmation name being Isidore.  St. Isidore of Seville is the patron saint of the Internet (among other things).  Seeing as how I am now communicating to you via the Internet, I believe we can appropriately ask for St. Isidore to watch over Cleansing Fire and guide our fingers as we type and click.

Speaking of being a Johnny-come-lately, I only started reading Calvin and Hobbes about a year ago and I am continually amazed by the quality of this comic.  Here’s couple more which I think we should find especially funny here at CF.
(not displaying the images here isn’t out of my own laziness, but in a careful reading of the terms of gocomics). Hopefully sometime in the future, they’ll make it easier to past the actual comics (with actual links)

and a non-sequitur (I’m not sure I totally get it, but I think it’s funny)

Seminarian Peter Motolla’s latest blog post. Excellent post, Peter.

one from FATHER C. JOHN MCCLOSKEY on the importance of friendship.

and one from FR. PETER STRAVINSKAS on “no salvation outside the Church”

I owe a hit tip to Dave Armstrong for the above 2 links. If you can keep up w/ him, he drills deep into many apologetical topics.

I am always a bit sad when I consider “confirmation names.”

My RCIA class left a lot to be desired. It was essentially “Catholicism for Catholics,” rather than the “Catholicism for Dummies” I had expected. The concept of a “Confirmation name” was never mentioned. It wasn’t until I was filling out the paperwork and saw field “Chosen Name” that this concept came up.

I asked the teacher what this meant. The best answer she could muster was “oh, that’s just if you want to choose a name.”

Discouraged by this non-answer, I left it blank (or put in my given-name, I can’t remember which).

Back in the very early ’60’s, I recall being told in a city far from here, you chose a saint to emulate, so you took a “Confirmation Name.” I presume still a decent thing. You never, ever use the name; however, you always know it because you yourself added it.

That friendship between men article is great, it’s so long though, I’m only 30% through it….

    Ludwig,
No need to feel slighted. AFAIK, there’s nothing really official about it. Sure, it would’ve been nice to have it explained better, but you can rectify it by just picking one now if you want. And later on, if you feel drawn to another Saint, you can just declare that you have a special devotion to St. so-and-so. At least that’s my understanding – anyone else have any insights?
