Obituary for Fr. McCarthy:
Rochester: Born April 20, 1929 in Rochester, NY. Died on Tuesday March 15, 2011 at the age of 81. He is predeceased by his parents, F. Cyril McCarthy and Marie Gantert. Fr. McCarthy is survived by his Basilian confr?res and Lay Associates, several cousins and many friends. Fr. McCarthy attended Sacred Heart School and the Aquinas Institute and graduated from the University of St. Michael’s College in Toronto. He made his first profession in the Congregation of St. Basil (Basilian Fathers) on August 15, 1948 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 29, 1958. Fr. McCarthy served the Church as a high school teacher and a college professor in the United States and Canada, including at the Aquinas Institute and St. John Fisher College in Rochester before beginning his ministry in parishes, at Holy Rosary Parish in Toronto. He served as pastor of Christ the King in Rochester. He also served at St. John of Rochester and St. Rita’s Parish in the diocese of Rochester. Fr. McCarthy’s final years were spent among his Basilian confreres at St. John Fisher College and then under the grace-filled care of the Sisters of St. Joseph at the Infirmary of the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse in Pittsford.
Calling hours will be held on SUNDAY 1:00 – 4:00PM at Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse Chapel (150 French Rd) where an Evening Prayer will be held at 4:00PM. Fr. McCarthy will lie in state MONDAY 2:00 – 7:00pm at Blessed Kateri at Christ The King Church where his Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 7:30pm. Interment private at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
