St. Charles Borromeo has made a correction to its announcement for people with Celiac disease. You may recall that the original announcement referred to the special hosts offered as “gluten-free.” As we explained, such hosts are not valid matter for Communion since some gluten is required for the consecration to take place. The parish has updated their announcement to now read “low gluten.” Provided that these hosts contain the requisite amount of gluten, they are valid matter for consecration. If you suffer from Celiac and attend this parish, it would appear that you can request these hosts without fear of consuming just food instead of the Body of Christ.
Thank you to the parish leaders for clarifying this matter. The distinction between low gluten and gluten-free is very important.
