Cardinal Roger Mahony retired yesterday as head of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
And then there were two.

Retires in 2012:
- Matthew Harvey Clark – Age 73.62 – Diocese of Rochester
Retires in 2013:
- Howard James Hubbard – Age 72.33 – Diocese of Albany

Actually,though Mahony went through a grand commemoration of his retirement,the formal announcement from the Vatican giving legal effect to his retirement has yet to be made.Trying to the last to be his own pope?

Perhaps everyone has the focus of the Mayan Prophecy wrong–maybe it was the end of Clark’s reign they foresaw?
Today’s Vatican bulletin formally enacts Mahony’s retirement,after he had issued one yesterday claiming it would take effect midnight LA time (which is off by three hours from the correct noon Rome time).
