This stunning church in New York City was just elevated to the rank of “Minor Basilica” by Pope Benedict XVI. It was built in 1815, and served as the first cathedral for the city until the new St. Patrick’s was built after the Civil War. The photo below is from a wedding there in 1967.

Gen,
Thank you for posting such a work of beauty! It does my soul good.
This post reminds me of the one I did that offered a suggestion for a possible make-over of the chancel at The Church of the Good Shepherd in Henrietta. My suggestion for Good Shepherd is not nearly as beautiful, of course, but I think you will agree the concept is the same.
I don’t know how to put a direct link in a comment box but here is the address of my post:

Well, I see I didn’t ned to know anything about how to put a direct link in a comment box!
Saw a picture in today’s NY Post. How sad that the high altar is no longer there.
Where is it in NYC?
Three of the four streets surrounding the block are Mott,Prince, and Mulberry.
By the way, they used to use http://www.oldsaintpatricks.com/ but now use http://www.oldcathedral.org/ (no idea of they’ll change again for Basilica status but they’ve changed the signs outside),Past time this church got it,much less historic ones in surrounding dioceses have.
