Priest Shortage?

October 31st, 2010, Promulgated by Dr. K

We have been getting several e-mails informing us that priests in Irondequoit have been concelebrating daily Masses. Today we have received a couple e-mails saying that a Sunday Mass was concelebrated today by Frs. Tim Horan and Norm Tanck CSB.

If there is a priest shortage, which was the major argument for closing St. Thomas, then why are priests concelebrating Masses in Irondequoit? There are some parishes in our diocese that have one Sunday Mass and only one or two weekday Masses. Here we are in Irondequoit with multiple priests present at Masses.

Come on.

Maybe they need to concelebrate Mass so they (the priests) can learn from each other the right way to celebrate Mass by themselves.

What a beautiful Mass at St. Thomas today. There is such a sense of sadness and yet peace too on the part of the congregation and choir in these last weeks. This despite the “in your face” insensitivity with two priests on the altar, Margi Ochs the lector (for the second time in three weeks) and Barbara “this is a terrific decision” Kelly as extraordinary minister.

How hilarious. They cry about a priest shortage and then have thebbodies to concelebrate. Boy, they wanted to destroy an orthodox parish but there is mud all cver their faces.

  4. Bernie says:

I can see the memo now: “Make yourselves scarce.”

It was a beautiful Mass: Fr. Horan prays the Holy Mass beautifully. The only sour note (literally) was the lector… she has the most grating voice I’ve ever heard proclaiming the Word of God, actually had me wincing. Further, she actually SITS in a chair on the altar during the Consecration! Just a travesty. Perhaps she doesn’t know any better… to leave the altar and get on her knees… but she is one who still claims she knows what’s best for all the rest of us, right? And ditto the sentiment already expressed here that she and the others who have cheered the closing of STA should have the decency to keep themselves as small as possible during these closing weeks. +JMJ

Just a theory, but perhaps Fr. Tanck wants only “Tanck-friendly” people taking the pulpit in the final weeks for fear that something may be mentioned about the appeal or against him.

  7. Sfomo says:

Dr. K, you may be right about Father’s fear of a takeover during the final weeks. I agree with JLo regarding our lector yesterday, whom they have thrust on us twice in three weeks. Considering how people feel about her poor representation on the IPPG, it does seem like we are being punished. (Haven’t we been punished enough?) I understand that the call has gone out for a volunteer to lector on November 14. Please, would someone step up?

  8. Abaccio says:

I can solve the issue of the grating lector…Get rid of her. Can’t do that? Sure you can! It’s quite simple, really. There’s no lector in the Extraordinary Form of the Mass!

  9. Order says:

For the most part I, along with many, agree that Fr. Horan’s celebration of the Mass on 10/31/10 was good. However – I was stunned when he elevated the consecrated host and said: “behold – this is the Lamb of God – greater than ghosts and goblins – who takes away the sins of the world . . . “. Others I spoke to heard this as well.
This is precisely the nonsense that we need to eliminate (the cutesy stuff) in order to draw good people into the Catholic Church! Don’t they see that modernism / progressive -style gimmicks don’t work? Fr. Callan (Corpus Christie) was experimenting with this “make-it-up-as-you-go-along” style back in the early 1980’s. I witnessed this myself – and ran 180 degrees the other way – never to return to ‘his’ church again. Small c intended.
Priests of our Diocese: please hear this… respectfully, we’re begging you – to simply follow what our Holy Mother Church teaches and simply read what is written in the Lectionary – and stop making things up! This is not what we need to be fed. We’re NOT (nor is the world) looking to you to feed us Jello – we’re looking for the meat & potatoes. Fr. Horan: didn’t you learn from Msgr. Murphy or Fr. Meng during your years there at Holy Rosary?

Another example of what St. Thomas the Apostle Parish is NOT about is yet another cutesy make-it-up-as-you-go-along (to show how clever you are?) from Fr. Tanck: “… Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles, Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on OUR FAITH (should be: the faith of your Church), and …”. His little twist completely changes the meaning!
So in conclusion: Fr. Horan & Fr. Tanck: say what you mean, and mean what you say. And, yes, please simply read what is written before you. Then at least we might have a fighting chance “to all get along” once the dust settles from this self – imposed demolition.

    ~ Thank you ~

The ghoul and goblin insertion was mentioned in an e-mail I received. Very strange.

  11. Shocked says:

It’s hard to believe a lector was sitting in a chair ON THE ALTAR during the consecration. How did she get up there? How did the chair get up there? It’s shocking to imagine this. [The poster meant sanctuary.]
