One of the criticisms the Latin Mass (in either the Ordinary or Extraordinary Form) is that using so much Latin seems to be more “show-offy” than humble and reverent. I humbly present Msgr. Guido Marini’s response to such claims regarding the use of Latin in the Pope’s forthcoming UK Masses.
“For all the Masses said in the UK the Preface and the Canon will be said in Latin. What the Holy Father intends by using Latin is to emphasise the universality of the faith and the continuity of the Church.”
“Universality of the faith, and the continuity of the Church” . . . do you think we should tell them that the people actually want steel drums and Caribbean singers singing Halle, Halle, Halle? Now that’s truly universal. Presuming, of course your “universe” is restricted to a couple dozen islands in the Gulf of Mexico . . .
