Defending Truth and Tradition in the Roman Catholic Church

“It’s going to be a bumpy ride!”

August 5th, 2010, Promulgated by Nerina

Federal judge overrides the will of the people (again) and rejects Proposition 8 in California.

The homosexual agenda continues to dismantle society’s traditional understanding of sexuality and marriage.  What effect will this have on our Church and what She is able to teach?  Will the Church be forced to perform “gay weddings”?  Will Christians be accused of “hate speech” if we speak out against “homosexual marriage”?

Now is the time to strengthen our resolve with prayer and the Sacraments (and hope this decision is eventually overturned by the Supreme Court).

In His Peace,

Nerina

Ugh, California. And what is up with this?
He called the exclusion of same-couples from marriage “an artifact of a time when the genders were seen as having distinct roles in society and marriage.”

“That time has passed,” he wrote.
SINCE WHEN? Granted, we don’t live in the fifties any more, but I’m pretty sure marriage is intended to have children. It’s called biology. Funny, how liberals can flaunt their “atheistic science” at us and claim that evolution and biology and chemistry rule all and that humans are animals (I will not continue down this rant), but somehow that falls completely by the wayside when someone takes it and uses it to defend the sanctity of real marriage.

I think I’d almost prefer the marijuana law be passed than this one. >_>; Lesser of two evils…

One of the sad items in our current culture has been the silence of almost all of our catholic clergy on the homosexual issue. Never do they preach about this. And then to boot, they never preach about abortion, NFP, birth control, premarital sex and pornography. During the health care debate, I did not hear 1 homily on health care.

Our nation is going down the tubes and the American Catholic Clergy are leading the way. If we lose our nation or if our nation dissolves, the Cathoic church in America will be one of the culprits that contributed to our downfall.

  3. Ink says:

Don’t go blaming everything on the clergy. Stand up for your faith yourself! Don’t be afraid to defend the Truth. Laity are sometimes the greatest crusaders because they are not “under the control of the Holy See.” The greatest thing any one of us can do is to be a witness to Christ and the Truth and to not just smile, nod, and stand by as atrocities occur.

As you know,I’m not religious, and strongly support abortion rights for reasons similar to those for which I oppose same-sex “marriage”…the need to draw strong distinctions between profoundly unequal things falsely represented as “equal”.

But if SSM in this marriage can’t be stopped,I believe civil marriage in this country loses all value…and I would urge all those who marry in churches to forgo the civil registration of their marriages in protest, and marry civilly only in countries where same-sex marriage remains banned,Since only a civil marriage would feel proper to me,I would only be able to marry abroad.

  5. Nerina says:

Louis – I had not thought about the impact on civil marriages. Can you expand on your thoughts regarding SSM and why you believe it be unequal when compared to traditional marriage? I appreciate your comment.

    Ink,

Do you think the politicians would push these agendas if there was no grass roots support.

Sure, we minority of Catholics must stand firm but the sweling of grassroots opposition to these radical ideas is not there mainly because the laity have never been taught from the pulpit. It’s a total neglect of the teaching role of the clergy. Do you think the politicians would be so pro homosexual and pro-choice if the grass roots people were against it. It’s all about votes. Thanks to most of our bishops and priests, American Catholics support these radical ideas just like the rest of the population. Catholics contracept and abort the same as the general population.

  7. Dr. K says:

Anon 11:58 – They do preach on gay marriage. However, in this diocese that means pro-gay marriage.

See my recent post on Fr. Kennedy.

  8. Ink says:

    Anon 5:43,
You can blame and point fingers at whomever you choose, but don’t tell me that you don’t get into political discussions at all. If you ever do, start explaining to your friends with whom you disagree why you believe and support what you do. Also, live your faith in whatever vocation you have been called to follow. Answer questions when people ask. Do not be afraid to offend–many are offended by the Truth.

By the way, one last recommendation. Sign your comments. =P

    @anon and @Ink
I think we should tone down the debate a little. anon, I think we all agree that the clergy haven’t been (and still aren’t) as strong as they could be on these issues. You are right – these issues are too rarely preached from the pulpit. Perhaps some priests feel like they’d be isolated if they did. We, as laity, might encourage our priests personally to preach on such subjects. I think your intentions were good, Ink, to point the finger at the laity as well. However, it’s a bit presumptuous to assume that anon hasn’t been doing his/her part. Both clergy and laity could do better. I think we all agree on that. Let’s not start arguments over things we agree on.

    Nerina,

Re the “slippery slope” argument: There are several online articles dealing with this. Google [“same sex marriage” polygamy] (without the brackets but with the quotes) for a good selection.

I particularly like the description of the “slippery slope” that actually occurred in the case of the Supreme Court and abortion that is written up in the Hofstra Law Review reference; it begins here under “The Slippery Past” heading.

  11. Louis E. says:

    Nerina…
I believe that the government has an obligation to the general welfare to discourage the formation and maintenance of same-sex sexual relationships, and to guarantee that opposite-sex relationships perpetually receive preferential treatment that their being opposite-sex entitles them to.To open marriage to same-sex couples transforms it from part of the solution into part of the problem.

To be legally declared equal to something that is inherently worthless is a status no one should seek for their own relationahip.

  12. Anonymous says:

It is one thing to speak with the average person about these issues but I think we can all agree that when speaking with some of these zealots and ideologues, it is futile. After having beaten my head against the wall many times with these people, I realize it is a special grace to dialogue with them,a grace I now do not have, but that’s OK because I have other talents. I will defer to someone else to do that job. But if I am ever called to speak with these people, the grace will be there.

  13. Nerina says:

Louis and Mike – thank you.

I tend to agree with Anon’s lament that our pastors have done too little in this and other areas of teaching. It all started with the large scale dissent of Humanae Vitae and has gone unabated in many places. Ink, I think we can witness to others with varying amounts of success, but our priests – our *spiritual fathers* – should be on the front line. It would be like my husband sending out our children to protect against a home invader – they should not be the ones dealing with the threat (at least not until they are fully prepared). Now some lay people have great success in proclaiming the Truth, but I have found that so many people simply “don’t. want. to. hear. it!” It truly is a gift to be given the desire for and ability to hear the truth.

  14. Anonymous says:

I think part of the mission of the lay people is to get our clergy to man and woman up and start standing for these traditional issues.

  15. Ink says:

Anon 4:32–If we’re talking about the clergy, I most certainly hope they only “man up.”
