Defending Truth and Tradition in the Roman Catholic Church

Cleansing Fire Staffer Makes the Courier

May 5th, 2010, Promulgated by Dr. K

One of the new members of our upcoming eleven-member staff for Cleansing Fire 2.0, Nerina, has penned an excellent defense of Pope Pius XII. As you know, Pope Pius XII has come under fire by progressives and some Jewish leaders for alleged inaction during Adolf Hitler’s Holocaust. The truth, however, is that this holy servant of God took several actions to save the lives of Jews from the Nazi regime.

Here is her letter to the editor defense of this great pope as it appeared in the recent issue of Rochester’s Catholic Courier:

[Update 5/6/10- The letter now appears online at the Courier Web site]

“Surprised By Article The article, “Catholic scholars ask pope to slow process of Pope Pius XII’s cause,” is deeply troubling. It not only undermines the Church’s authority and Her ability to decide canonizations, but also sows seeds of doubt among the faithful. I was surprised to find it in the Courier.

The objectors should know that tens of thousands of documents demonstrate Pius’ righteousness during World War II and the Holocaust. In fact, print journalism at the time of the war was uniformly supportive of the pope. The New York Times, in 1941 proclaimed: “The voice of Pius XII is a lonely voice in the silence and darkness enveloping Europe this Christmas… he is about the only ruler left on the Continent of Europe who dares to raise his voice at all… the Pope put himself squarely against Hitlerism… he left no doubt that the Nazi aims are also irreconcilable with his own conception of a Christian peace.” Pius’s actions are numerous and include behind the scenes orders to open all convents and monasteries to house Jews and to make Castle Gandolfo a refuge.

For anyone willing to look, the truth is easy to find. There have been countless books written, interviews done, and sources reviewed. Israeli diplomat Pinchas Lapide wrote in 1967, “The Catholic Church under the pontificate of Pius XII was instrumental in saving as many as 860,000 Jews from a certain death at Nazi hands. This figure exceeds by far those saved by all other churches and rescue organizations combined.” I suggest people start with the book “Hitler, the War and the Pope,” by Ronald Rychlak. I would also recommend avoiding John Cornwell’s book “Hitler’s Pope” which has been oft refuted. This is a cause we should be proud to support.”

Excellent defense, Nerina!

    Ha, excellent news

and hey, Gen, you just let slip who one o' the new authors is…you know, for those of us interested in those things! I can't wait till the new site is up…

I saw that letter today in the courier, but didn't have a chance to read it…I noticed it defended Pope Pius, but didn't notice the author. I thought "excellent, excellent, glad to see there's some hope for Rochester yet…" Only to find out it's already a CF regular…

  3. Great job, Nerina, and I look forward to your contributions to this site.

Nice job Nerina. It's crazy to think this all originated with the 1963 play, "The Deputy" by Rolf Hochhuth. Good example of how culture can lead us astray if we let it.

Thanks to all for the compliments. Looking forward to the kick-off of CF 2.0.

I remember that when the Courier had an article on the Vatical visitation of the seminaries in the USA, it failed to mention that many seminaries had teachers on staff that dissented from Church teaching. Unfortunately, the paper does not present an objective analysis but knowing the DOR, I am not surprised.
