Defending Truth and Tradition in the Roman Catholic Church

February 11th, 2010, Promulgated by Dr. K

Whispers in the Loggia is confirming earlier reports regarding the appointment of a coadjutor bishop for Roger Card. Mahony, the very progressive leader of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Whispers reports that a memo was sent to all priests of the diocese calling on them to pray for the selection of their next bishop. Below is the memo as it appears on that site:

“ANNOUNCEMENT: The Canon Law of the Church requires every bishop on his seventy-fifth birthday to submit his letter of resignation to the Holy Father. In this month of February 2009 our Archbishop, Cardinal Roger Mahony, reaches his seventy-fourth birthday. The process for the selection of the next Archbishop of Los Angeles has already begun. The Cardinal and the Council of Priests have requested that all parishes and parishioners of the Archdiocese join with them in prayer for the selection of the Cardinal?s successor. The following prayer has been approved for recitation in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.”

If Mahony will be appointed a coadjutor one year before his 75th birthday, might Bishop Clark of Rochester also receive one next July? One can hope.

Card. Mahony turns 75 in February of 2011.

You may be jumping the gun about a coadjutor. Even the Whispers article says it is only "much expected," not confirmed. Let's not put the cart before the horse here.

The original document cited by Whispers in the Loggia states, "As you may be aware, the process for the selection of the Archbishop of Los Angeles has begun." It seems whether it's a coadjutor first or simply "a new bishop," they're getting ready.

  3. Louis E. says:

Thomas Peters of American Papist originated the coadjutor reports.

We better pray for the NEW coadjutor for LA. This poor lamb will be going into a huge burocratic den of liberal Mahoney appointees. It will be David verses Goliath.
