Progressive Response to Vatican Investigation Into Women’s Religious Orders

October 2nd, 2009, Promulgated by Dr. K

The following is a press release from the uber-liberal “Call To Action” group:

“The Vatican has requested that U.S. Catholics contribute $1.1 million to fund an investigation of women religious in the United States. The Vatican claims this investigation is to evaluate the “quality of the life” of women religious.

This request for funding is deeply problematic. First, many dioceses already suffer from a lack of resources causing many parishes to be closed. Catholic families are struggling to make ends meet during this economic recession. Those same families and parishes are now being asked to donate their money to investigate the very sisters who have faithfully served them for years.

“Surely, during this time of economic struggle the Vatican could use $1.1 million to help meet the needs of the most vulnerable in our society,” says Jim FitzGerald, Call To Action Executive Director.

Secondly, Mother Mary Claire Millea, head of this investigation, admitted that those who have already financially contributed to this investigation do not want their names publicized. As a matter of justice, those being investigated have the right to know who is funding such an investigation and the real reasons why this inquiry is being conducted.

“We are also concerned that the Vatican and some bishops may take money that has already been donated for other causes and use it to fund this inquisition-like investigation,” says FitzGerald. “The lack of transparency is very disturbing.”

Call To Action is calling on its 25,000 members to contact their bishops and request that their dioceses not fund this investigation. We believe financially contributing to this unnecessary inquiry perpetuates the abuse of power that is so prevalent within the Church hierarchy.”

A few observations here regarding the progressive hypocrisy you have just read:

1. $1.1 million is a drop in the bucket for a three year study. The Diocese of Rochester’s CMA overhead costs alone are approximately $329,400 (6% of $5,490,000). It is not unreasonable at all for many many dioceses to split the cost of this investigation.

2. “…many dioceses already suffer from a lack of resources causing many parishes to be closed” – Again, this cost is not that significant, and will have little impact on any one diocese.

3. “Surely, during this time of economic struggle the Vatican could use $1.1 million to help meet the needs of the most vulnerable in our society” – Where were the cries of the progressives when millions upon millions were wasted unnecessarily on the destruction of beautiful churches like Sacred Heart Cathedral and St. John Cathedral of Milwaukee? I guess those expenditures are fine with them, because it’s towards projects that they want.

4. “As a matter of justice, those being investigated have the right to know who is funding such an investigation and the real reasons why this inquiry is being conducted.” – Why do they want these names? So they can go egg their houses and picket with signs on their front lawns? This demand for names seems to suggest that they want these for a less than pleasant purpose. As for the real reasons for the investigation, I think it’s obvious that many are fed up with the heresy coming from some of the women religious groups, such as the strong push for the ordination of women (look at some of our local sisters and ex-sisters with regard to this item).

5. “We are also concerned that the Vatican and some bishops may take money that has already been donated for other causes and use it to fund this inquisition-like investigation” – Just like how money was taken from DoR parishioners to fund the Cathedral rennovation?

6. “Call To Action is calling on its 25,000 members to contact their bishops and request that their dioceses not fund this investigation.” – Oh really? How often I hear from the progressives about how negative the orthodox Catholics are, and how they are always writing to their bishops when something is wrong. But what are these people doing? They don’t agree with this investigation so they are going to write to their bishops (and probably the Vatican too).

7. “We believe financially contributing to this unnecessary inquiry perpetuates the abuse of power that is so prevalent within the Church hierarchy.” – Abuse of power? But wait, don’t progressives not like it when the orthodox Catholics complain about liberal leaders who abuse their power and disobey Church law? It’s OK for them to cry foul over nonsense, but not for us over legitimate liturgical abuses?

Remember this CTA press release the next time someone makes a comment that orthodox Catholics are too negative and complain all the time. When the shoe is on the other foot, the progressives get upset too… if not worse.

It's true, these libs are whining over an insignificant cost. What are there, like 190 or so dioceses in our country? That means each one would pay no more than $5700. Oh, what a travesty! That $5700 could have fed the poor! Never mind the billions wasted on the progressive agenda such as removing altar rails, tearing down high altars and creating out of the way adoration chapels.

Maybe they should realize that things are no longer going their way, and progressive Catholicism as they know it is closing in on extinction as the 60s generation enters the world to come. Party is over guys, you had enough fun destroying the Catholic Church over the past 50 years.

"25,000 members are being asked to write their Bishops and request that their dioceses not fund the investigation."? Huh?

Dr. K. Please ad the word obedience to our glossary.
Then please use it in a sentence.

  3. Mike says:

    obedience

St. Paul gives us 2 examples in Romans (1:5 and 16:26): "the obedience of faith."

    Here's obedience in a sentence:

"Rather than be obedient to the Catholic Church, progressives have decided to show their obedience to Call to Action"
