Defending Truth and Tradition in the Roman Catholic Church

I Think They Have It Backwards

October 23rd, 2009, Promulgated by Dr. K

From a local church bulletin:

“However, we encourage Common Sense: if you are ill or your child is ill, please stay home; if you are concerned about holding hands or giving the sign of peace, use good judgment; there is little danger in receiving the host in the hand or drinking the precious blood from the cup; people who receive Communion on the tongue should probably refrain from this manner during the flu season. We will continue to monitor the situation.”

I hope this is just a typo. This article appears to claim that there is “little danger” in receiving from the chalice, yet there is danger in receiving Communion on the tongue. I would think receiving from the chalice would make one far more likely to contract Swine Flu since your saliva comes into contact with the chalice, and perhaps even the Precious Blood (the splash back effect). Now unless the priest sticks his fingers in your mouth, there really is no risk involved with receiving Communion on the tongue.

Hopefully progressive priests will not try to take advantage of the current Swine Flu problem in order to eliminate Communion on the tongue. If your priest refuses you Communion on the tongue because of Swine Flu, or for any other reason, do not hesitate to contact Cleansing Fire with your story. Catholics have a right to receive our Lord on the tongue.

My personal prayer is that everyone in the US will stop holding hands during the Our Father because of H1N1, then when the "scare" is over they will all be out of the habit and we'll be done with that silly illicit custom!

Gretchen. I agree. Starting tomorrow we should all begin this process by politely explaning why we won't hold hands. If we attend a church that offers sign of peace with shaking hands we could do this too.

Better yet we could wear masks and point to them.

  3. Dr. K says:

I like that mask idea. Nobody would dare extend out their hand if they thought one had Swine flu.

  4. On the front of the mask in indelible mark write "Swine Flu?"

  5. Yapollo says:

I am all for the lack of holding hands, count me in.
