Praying for the Impossible

July 23rd, 2009, Promulgated by Dr. K

Many of you probably remember the comments made by Fr. Kevin Murphy of St. Louis church in Pittsford in a recent bulletin where he prayed for the Church to consider women and married men as priestly candidates. Cleansing Fire first broke this story in the post “Just ‘Male Celibates’ as Priests?” Well, it appears Fr. Murphy has received some responses to his comments; comments where he prayed for something clarified infallibly as being impossible in Ordinatio Sacerdotalis. Here are Fr. Murphy’s jottings in the upcoming St. Louis bulletin (emphasis in bold):

“I had several positive comments from parishioners about my June 28 article about the needs of the Priesthood?and one negative who wrote directly to the Bishop?I am awaiting the specifics of that one, but feel that we all need to foster vocations and this person I hope is doing that in his (her) life and circle of friends?it is what makes the world go round, and we need to always be respectful of one another even when we disagree?I wish the person had spoken or written to me first, but certainly do not want to keep anyone from writing the Bishop? or the Pope for that matter?”

It appears from his comments that someone summoned the courage to bring Father’s prayer to the attention of Bishop Clark. I applaud whoever took this action. Although nothing may come of it, hopefully Fr. Murphy will at least be more careful of publicly pushing for the ordination of women in the future.

Please pray for Fr. Murphy, please pray for Bishop Clark, and please pray for the Diocese of Rochester. They need our prayers desperately. Please also pray that more young men will answer the call to the priesthood.

Can I pray for him to retire too?

Why doesn't Fr. Murphy go pray for women priests over at Spiritus Christi? As soon as Callan retires, that's all they'll have over there.

He looks like Santa Claus but he talks like Ray Grosswirth.

Fr. Murphy is a bit of a cocky fellow, isn't he?
