Reminder: Today Is Ash Wednesday

February 17th, 2010, Promulgated by Dr. K
Abstinence: No meat [ages 14+]

Fast: No eating between meals. One full meal, and two lesser meals permitted. [Ages 18-60]

Remember not to go around saying “woe is me” when you fast. The Lord spoke quite negatively about such a thing:

“And when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, who disfigure their faces in order to appear to men as fasting. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. But thou, when thou dost fast, anoint thy head and wash thy face, so that thou mayest not be seen fasting by men, but by thy Father, who is in secret; and thy Father, who sees in secret, will reward thee.” (Matthew 6:16-18)

Fulfill your Lenten obligations, but don’t gloat about it. It is time to prepare for the death and resurrection of our Lord. Good luck to all as we embark on this journey.

I don' think you can have "one large meal, and two lesser meals".

According to the USCCB:" Fasting allows a person to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to equal one full meal."

I'm not following you. What's incorrect about it?

The word "large" is incorrect. One meal is to be a regular meal (I guess this is what you mean by "large"). The other two meals are together not to equal a full meal. In other words, we don't overeat at one meal and then have less at the other two.

Yes, that was what was meant.

Let me be for specific: the two lesser meals are just that – lesser. The amount of food at the two "lesser" meals should not together equal what one would eat at one regular meal. The "regular" meal we eat should be simple, not "large".

USCCB sounds like only one meal total may be taken all day. Not three meals total.
